News and Announcements - 12/06/07 Romanov House - No Restitution

from Interfax

Moscow, December 6, Interfax - The House of Romanov is ready to move to Russia only after the state recognizes its historic status, head of the Russian Imperial House chancellery Alexander Zakatov said.

"The issue does not concern any restitution, that is something hard to imagine. It will be enough to recognize Imperial House's status as a historic institution without changing the republican government," Zakatov told a news conference at Interfax on Thursday.

It will be enough for the Imperial House to return to Russia if the state "forms an attitude to the Imperial House as a structure that guarantees links with the past," he said.

Representatives of former imperial dynasties have returned to a number of Eastern European countries, in particular Bulgaria, Romania, and Serbia, Zakatov said, adding that "they now participate in public life, live together with their people, and preserve history," Zakatov said.

"The same thing could be done in Russia," he said.

"Who will be harmed by the return of the Imperial House and the recognition of the last tsar's family as victims of repression?" Zakatov said.

The Imperial House does not have any claims as to any property in Russia, he said.

Currently, head of the Russian Imperial House Grand Duchess Maria Vladimirovna and members of her family live in Madrid, the city where the grand duchess herself and her son Georgy Mikhailovich, the legal successor of the head of the Russian Imperial House, were born.

Moscow, December 6, Interfax - The Russian Imperial House will not ask for compensation if the rehabilitation of Nicholas II and his family is eventually attained, head of the house's office Alexander Zakatov told a Thursday press conference at the Interfax main office.

"So many years have passed since the revolution, and there are no indisputable heirs in the majority of cases. Anyway, a redistribution of property will endanger civic peace. The grand duchess thinks it wrong to create this danger to the modern state and the people," he said.

The grand duchess has said many times that "she does not and will never demand anything and advised others against such attempts," Zakatov said.

"Great Duchess Maria Vladimirovna said that she, her father and her grandfather who represent the Royal House in exile are against reinstitution," he said.

"The main goal of this rehabilitation is moral and legal. It would be wrong to use it for speculations or any claims for property and compensations," he said.
